This great, casual bar sort of resembles a boy’s bedroom – you’ll find Tonka trucks taking pride of place on shelves, Tintin cartoons plastered on the walls and a little R2D2 robot sitting in the corner, with a beer in each hand, naturally. It’s less a bar and more of a bunker, a cosy little cave off the beaten track. Rekindle leaners and stools offer plenty of room to sit and spend some time. Grandpa chairs in brown and yellow tartan make the space even cosier – they’re rather reminiscent of 70s basements and Frasier Crane’s dad. But to ensure the space is as gender neutral as it can be, you’ll also find scented candles, trees hanging from the ceiling and little bonsai trees.
Don’t go for the decor though, go for the incredible selection of boutique brews on offer. Personal favourites included the Gunnamatta (an earl grey infused beer), the raspberry wheat beer and Invercargill Pitch Black – a syrupy dark mixture reminiscent of coffee-like potion. There is always something new on tap, and they often hold residencies with Kiwi craft brewers. In the very unlikely event that there’s nothing on on of the 18 tap that you want, the bottled beer selection is massive, it goes for days.
There are board games to play and a pizza oven, which add to that friend’s garage feeling, or you can order Whitestone cheeses, Salash Delicatessen cured meats and toasted pillowy white bread which is presented to you on a big wooden board with some crisp cold pressed olive oil for good measure. It’s a perfect hang out for beer lovers, the kind of place you’ll make your living room on Sunday afternoons.
