Brynley Stent will be a familiar face if you’re a fan of SNORT, which we are. She’s an improv star who’s making a move into stand up at this year’s Comedy Festival. Go and see her at the Basement this weekend!
I’m a Cancerian but I also don’t really believe in Star Signs.
My day usually begins with absolutely ginormous breakfast and ends with an absolutely ginormous dinner (I really shouldn’t eat so close to sleeping, this is why I have strange dreams)
Name your three favourite places in Auckland to eat, drink and play
Boy and Bird, The Basement Theatre, Timezone Metro
Tell us something we’d be surprised to know about you
I peed my pants when I was 21. I was sitting on my friends laundry hamper at the time, and I had to wear his clothes home (not the ones from the laundry hamper)
Pick a book and a park you’d like to read it in, anywhere in the world.
Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens
Tell us a little bit about your comedy fest show with Donna Brookbanks and Alice Snedden.
It’s a stand-up line-up show which features Donna, Alice and I. We all have very different styles but I would say the common link between all of us is we all have a slightly twisted or dark sense of humour. You will hear stories about, but not limited to, IBS, family nudity and being sad and alone. Dammit…I shouldn’t have finished on the bit about being sad and alone. Parties! We also talk about fun parties!
Why have you decided to join forces? How does your style of comedy differ from theirs?
We all perform in Snort together, and I think we are all at sort of similar stages of our standup journeys (if you will). We have all performed at Raw comedy nights a fair few times and we thought it was just the natural step to do a full length show together. We all have very different stage personas. Alice is sort of dry, cynical and HILARIOUS, Donna is a mixture of both extremely sad and extremely loveable and I like to flail my arms around a bit and talk about my Dad’s dick.
What else are you looking forward to seeing at the NZICF? Why?
OOOhhhhhh so many! I’m looking forward to seeing all my fellow Snort members, not only because they are my friends but I genuinely think they are all very talented performers and their shows are always wildly creative and hilarious. Nic Sampson, Guy Montgomery, Rose Matafeo, Joseph Moore, Eli Matthewson, Hamish Parkinson and my girl Laura Daniel in her Billy T Nominee show.
As well as a whole handful of other shows. Too many to name. What a hive of talent.
Who are your favourite comedians of all time and why?
Kirsten Wiig, Amy Poehler and Louis C.K
They are all so real and absolutely kick-ass. Kirsten and Amy are both powerhouses who act, write, produce, direct etc. which just shows that, at the heart of it, they really just want to make great comedy. Louis just cuts me deep. He cuts me real deep.
If everyone in the world had a theme song that played when they walked into a room, what would yours be and why?
There’s something light and airy about this song, but it also has slightly sinister undertones to it. Sometimes I feel like there’s a disguising little goblin inside me rearing to get out.
Brynley Stent performs in SNEDDEN, BROOKBANKS AND STENT LTD until Sat 7 May at Basement Theatre, as part of the 2016 NZ International Comedy Festival powered by Flick Electric Co. from 22 April – 15 May.
